Reasons & Symptoms:
A cough can be the result of a respiratory tract infection such as the common cold. The disease can be non-productive (dry) or productive (when sputum is coughed up). It may occur only at night (then called nocturnal cough), during both night and day, or just during the day. The repetition of coughing produces inflammation which produces discomfort, which in turn produces more coughing. Emotional and psychological problems may also lead to coughing.
